Wireless contact lens display now a reality

“It has finally been done: A team of US and Finnish bioengineers have embedded an antenna, radio receiver, control circuitry, and LED into a wearable contact lens. If you’re a rabbit, you can hop along to their research lab at the University of Washington, Seattle, and try it out right now — but if you’re a human, you’ll still have to wait a couple more years for the bionic, Terminator-like HUD of your dreams.”  Read more…

Microsoft touts Kinect at tiny hut in shadow of Apple store

“Crowds flocked to the Apple store at University Village in Seattle on Saturday afternoon, enticed by the possibility of picking up a new iPhone 4S. But a few steps away, Microsoft was doing a little guerilla marketing of its own. The company has set up a temporary hut within spitting distance of the Apple store. It is not really a store, since nothing is for sale.”  Read more…

Umbrellas are now illegal in Seattle thanks to Mayor McGinn

“As basic human rights go, the right to take shelter under an umbrella is about as basic as it gets, especially in drizzly Seattle. It’s also a right that, at least for the Occupy Seattle protestors in Westlake Park, seems to have been revoked, thanks to Mayor Mike McGinn.”  Read more…

5 major cities that are going to be destroyed

“If you turn on the news and hear that some city is being devastated by its fourth flood in 20 years, or that a village at the foot of some volcano has just been buried under lava, there is a 100 percent chance that someone in the room will ask, Why don’t those people just move? It’s a good question, and the answer gives us a nice insight into mankind’s absolute refusal to back down from nature, even if it means certain destruction.”

  1. San Francisco: earthquake
  2. Venice, Italy: sinking
  3. Seattle, WA: earthquake   (Holy crap! That’s where I live!)
  4. Goma, DRC: volcanic eruption
  5. Dahka, Bangladesh: almost everything

“WSB contributor Bill “Hutch” Hutchison spoke today with its new owners, sisters Muzit and Senait, who shared a bit of information about their plans to open West Seattle Fish House. Mark Zuckerberg discusses Facebook's hiring plans in Seattle

“Relative to Facebook’s growth, ‘That 60 percent is actually pretty restrained.’ This requires another kind of discipline. ‘I think the way you do that is by making sure that every person that you hire is like, really good,’ [Zuckerberg] said, then joked about how every company says that, but Facebook has a formula. ‘One thing you find in engineering is a really good person is like 10 times as productive as a pretty good person. I’m not talking about a bad person — I think bad people are negatively productive because of all the externalities of stuff that has to be cleaned up around them — but pretty good people, who would be the best engineer at a lot of companies.’”  Read more…
